I read NHTSA's recall records for every 2020 to 2026 Model Y, then counted the complaints owners have filed on each model year. Each complaint counts once in a model year's total, and once in every area of the car the owner named on the form.
Which Model Y years are in the suspension recall?
Only the 2026, and only a small batch of those. Tesla filed campaign 26V558000 with NHTSA on September 1, 2026, for "certain 2026 Model Y vehicles." NHTSA's campaign record puts the potential population at 19 cars. When I asked NHTSA's recall API for the 2020 through 2025 Model Y on September 22, none of those years listed it.
It's an assembly problem. On the affected cars, one or more front suspension lateral link fasteners may not have been tightened properly. The link can then loosen or come away from the sub-frame, and NHTSA's filing says that could throw off the wheel alignment and cause a loss of control.
The fix is free. Tesla Service will tighten or replace the fasteners, check the alignment and replace any parts that were damaged. Tesla expects to mail owner letters on October 30, 2026, and its internal number for the recall is SB-26-31-004.
How do I check my Model Y's VIN?
It takes about a minute.
- Find the 17-character VIN. It's printed low on the driver's side of the windshield, on the driver door jamb and on your registration.
- Type it into NHTSA's recall lookup.
- Read the result. If 26V558000 is open on your car, it shows up there by number. If it comes back clean, it's worth checking again after Tesla's owner letters go out on October 30.
Don't go by the model year alone. A 2026 Model Y is only a possible match; the VIN is what decides it.
Has Tesla recalled the Model Y suspension before?
Yes. NHTSA lists four earlier Model Y suspension campaigns. Two of them are about the same part, lateral link fasteners on the front suspension.

"Cars" is NHTSA's potential population for each campaign. The largest, 21V835000, covered 2,791, Model 3s included. So if you own a 2020 to 2023 Model Y, the new recall isn't yours, but one of the older ones might be. The VIN lookup covers those too.
What do Model Y owners report about the suspension?
On the 2026, suspension, wheels or tires come up in 36 of the 344 complaints filed as of September 16, 2026. The 2023 has 159, though it has had years longer on the road.
After the 2023, the 2021 is next at 86. I also ran a plain text search of the complaint narratives for "control arm" or "lateral link." It matched 100 complaints on the 2023, 49 on the 2021 and 6 on the 2026. That's a rough count: a narrative can mention a control arm the dealer checked and cleared. It still points the same way as the chart.
Which Model Y years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2023, with 1,147 complaints as of September 16, 2026, just ahead of the 2021 at 1,070. The 2026 has 344 so far.
Treat that chart with care. These are raw reports, not adjusted for how many cars Tesla sold in each year or how long they've been on the road, so older years have had more time to pile up complaints. As the about page explains, complaints are not failure rates. This chart, and every other complaint count on this page, drops complaints with an impossible filing date (one filed in the future, or before the car could have been sold).
As the newest year, the 2026 also drew the most recent reports. Owners filed 73 complaints on it in the 90 days to September 16, more than on any other Model Y year (the 2023 was next at 53). Only one of those 73 names the suspension. The full year-by-year list lives on the Tesla Model Y hub.
What do 2026 Model Y owners complain about most?
Driver assistance, by a wide margin. It comes up in 135 of the 344 complaints on the 2026 (39.2%). Second is "Other," at 109. Almost all of those use NHTSA's "unknown or other" category rather than naming a system. Electrical is third at 51.
That's the pattern on every Model Y year from 2020 on. Driver assistance and speed control, which groups forward collision avoidance, lane departure, speed control and back-over prevention, leads each year, from 39.2% of the 2026's complaints to 63.7% of the 2022's. A complaint can name more than one area, so the bars add up to more than 344.
The suspension recall is the eighth NHTSA campaign that lists the 2026 Model Y. The earlier seven cover parts such as the wiper linkage, seat fasteners and the horn.
