Rivian's recall 26V625000, filed with NHTSA on September 29, 2026, covers certain 2027 Rivian R2 vehicles whose high voltage battery fastener may have been improperly tightened; Rivian puts the potentially affected population at 14 vehicles.
This is the R2's second campaign on file; the first, 26V597000, is a rearview camera software recall covered below. NHTSA's by-vehicle list and RideTruth's recall list for the 2027 R2 both show the same two.
What does 26V625000 say can go wrong?
According to Rivian's filing, a high voltage battery fastener may have been improperly tightened, causing a loss of drive power. NHTSA's record gives the consequence as an increased risk of a crash. It files the campaign under the component ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:PROPULSION SYSTEM:CRITICAL FASTENERS. The record does not say which fastener it is, where it sits, or how the tightening went wrong, and this post does not guess.
The remedy is a service visit. Rivian will inspect and repair the connection or replace damaged components as necessary, free of charge, and NHTSA's over-the-air flag for the campaign reads false. Owner letters are expected November 28, 2026, which is also the date the record gives for the VINs becoming searchable on NHTSA.gov. Rivian numbers the recall FSAM-1888, and the record lists Rivian customer service for owners with questions.
The 14 is a potential population: R2s that could carry the fault, whether or not any has been inspected. NHTSA's record does not say how many 2027 R2s have been built or delivered, so it gives no way to tell what share of the R2s on the road that is.
Volkswagen's ID.4 battery recall is a different kind of campaign. Owners there are advised to limit charging while a repair is still being developed.
The rearview camera campaign, 26V597000
| Campaign | Filed with NHTSA | Component, as RideTruth's recall list shows it | Fix | Potential population |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 26V597000 | September 16, 2026 | BACK OVER PREVENTION:SOFTWARE | Over-the-air software update, released | 98,828 |
| 26V625000 | September 29, 2026 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:PROPULSION SYSTEM:CRITICAL FASTENERS | Inspection and repair, or replacement | 14 |
Campaign 26V597000 says the rearview camera image may be obstructed by a notification when the car is in reverse, and NHTSA's record says that means the vehicles fail the federal rear visibility standard. Rivian has released a free over-the-air update, and owner letters are expected November 9, 2026. The campaign names certain 2022-2027 R1S, 2022-2026 R1T and 2027 R2 vehicles. Rivian's filing lists 98,828 vehicles as potentially affected across all three models, and NHTSA's record does not split that figure by model.
The two R2 campaigns describe unrelated problems, one in software and one in a battery fastener. The population column holds each filing's own estimate, and only the 14 belongs to the R2 alone.
Four complaints on the 2027 R2 so far
As of October 13, 2026, owners have filed 4 NHTSA complaints on the 2027 R2.
Four reports cannot be turned into a failure rate: nothing in the tally reflects how many R2s were sold or how long any has been in service.
| Area named in the 2027 R2 complaints | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Airbags & Restraints | 2 |
| Brakes | 2 |
| Driver Assistance & Speed Control | 1 |
| Electrical | 1 |
| Fuel System | 1 |
The rows overlap, since a report filed under two areas appears in both, and that is how 4 complaints produce more than 4 row entries. None of the four carries a crash, fire, injury or death flag. These labels do not show whether any complaint describes a loose fastener or a loss of drive power.
How do the R1S and R1T look in the same data?
The R1S and R1T have more model years in the catalog. Across the 2022 to 2027 model years in RideTruth's catalog, the Rivian R1S has 167 NHTSA complaints and the Rivian R1T has 129. The R1S's largest single year is 2023, with 76, and the R1T's is 2022, with 68. The photo below shows an R1S, taken in June 2025; the file does not give its model year.

| Model year | R1S complaints | R1T complaints |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 6 | 68 |
| 2023 | 76 | 39 |
| 2024 | 17 | 9 |
| 2025 | 54 | 9 |
| 2026 | 14 | 3 |
| 2027 | 0 | 1 |
In the 2027 row the R1S has 0 and the R1T has 1, next to the R2's 4.
Recall counts, one model year each, come from the same catalog. The 2026 R1S has 3 campaigns on file: 26V009000, filed January 15, 2026 under SEAT BELTS:CRITICAL FASTENERS, a turn signal campaign filed in August 2026, and the camera campaign 26V597000. The 2026 R1T has 2, the turn signal campaign and the same camera campaign. The 2027 R2 also has 2. These one-year counts leave out the 2022 model year, which NHTSA's by-vehicle lists show carrying more campaigns for both models. The one campaign on all three lists is 26V597000, and a shared software recall does not say that any hardware is shared.
What does EPA list for the 2027 R2?
EPA lists two four-wheel-drive configurations for the 2027 R2, and fueleconomy.gov names both R2 Performance AWD. MPGe is EPA's energy-equivalent rating for electric cars, not miles per gallon of fuel burned.
| fueleconomy.gov listing | Combined MPGe | City MPGe | Highway MPGe | EPA-estimated range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R2 Performance AWD (20in AT) | 99 | 109 | 89 | 307 miles |
| R2 Performance AWD (21in) | 105 | 114 | 96 | 330 miles |
When can an R2 owner look up the VIN?
NHTSA's record says VINs for 26V597000 become searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 9, 2026 and for 26V625000 on November 28, 2026. The recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls cannot answer for a specific R2 before those dates. Until then, your garage holds a saved R2 and runs the NHTSA recall campaign check each time you open it.
