NHTSA's record for recall 26V630000 says owners of certain 2023-2026 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles are advised to charge only to 80% of battery capacity until a repair is ready.
What does Volkswagen tell ID.4 owners to do now?
Volkswagen Group of America filed the recall, and NHTSA received it September 30, 2026. It covers certain 2023-2026 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles. The filing says the high-voltage battery may fail and lead to a vehicle fire, and that a fire increases the risk of injury.
The interim guidance is one instruction: charge only to a maximum of 80% of battery capacity until the repair has been completed. No dealer repair exists to book yet, because the record describes the remedy as under development. Volkswagen's interim letters to owners are expected to be mailed November 27, 2026, with further letters to follow once the remedy is ready.
Two things are missing from the record. It names no cause for the battery failure, and it says nothing about parking outside or avoiding DC fast chargers, which the filings for the earlier ID.4 campaigns 25V836000 and 26V028000 did say. NHTSA's record also flags neither "park it" nor "park outside" for 26V630000.
Volkswagen's number for this recall is 93EX, and the vehicle identification numbers involved became searchable at NHTSA's recall lookup on October 6, 2026. A model year inside the range does not put a particular car in the recall, so the VIN is the check.
Is a 2021 or 2022 ID.4 in this recall?
No. NHTSA's record lists the 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 model years, and lists 22,524 vehicles as potentially affected. That figure is the maker's estimate of vehicles that may carry the defect, not a count of vehicles that have failed.
| Model year | Listed in 26V630000 |
|---|---|
| 2021 ID.4 | No |
| 2022 ID.4 | No |
| 2023 ID.4 | Yes |
| 2024 ID.4 | Yes |
| 2025 ID.4 | Yes |
| 2026 ID.4 | Yes |
What battery recalls does the 2023 ID.4 already have?
RideTruth's records list 15 NHTSA campaigns for the 2023 ID.4 across all components, and four of them name the traction battery as the component. This one is the newest.
NHTSA's records for the four describe them differently:
| Campaign | NHTSA received | Model years | Potential population | What the filing says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25V836000 | December 3, 2025 | 2023-2024 | 629 | Battery cell modules may contain misaligned electrodes that can cause a battery fire. |
| 26V028000 | January 21, 2026 | 2023-2024 | 670 | Same wording as 25V836000. |
| 26V030000 | January 21, 2026 | 2023-2025 | 43,881 | The high-voltage battery may overheat, raising the risk of a fire. Dealers update software and replace the battery as necessary. |
| 26V630000 | September 30, 2026 | 2023-2026 | 22,524 | The high-voltage battery may fail and lead to a fire. Remedy under development. |
For 25V836000 and 26V028000, NHTSA's records say dealers will replace the battery cell modules as necessary, free of charge. Their interim advice was longer than the new one: park outside right after charging, do not leave the car charging indoors overnight, do not use DC fast chargers, and limit the charge to 80%.
NHTSA's record for 26V630000 does not say whether it is related to the three earlier campaigns. Whether one car appears in more than one of them is a question for its VIN.
How many complaints have ID.4 owners filed with NHTSA?
The 2023 ID.4 has the most NHTSA complaints of the six model years, 461, as of October 10, 2026. The 2021 has 336, the 2022 has 137 and the 2024 has 48. The 2025 has 27 and the 2026 has none, which makes 1,009 across the six.
A complaint count says how many owners wrote to NHTSA about a model year. It does not say how often the car fails, and it ignores how many ID.4s Volkswagen sold that year and how long they have been driven. The 2021 and 2022 counts belong to years that 26V630000 does not list.
Where do the 2023 ID.4's 461 complaints land?
Electrical is the area most named on the 2023 ID.4, at 231 of its 461 complaints (50.1%). Driver Assistance & Speed Control follows at 156 (33.8%) and Other at 139 (30.2%). A complaint can be filed under more than one area. The shares therefore add up to more than the whole.
NHTSA's fire field is checked on 5 of the 231 Electrical complaints. RideTruth has no area for the high-voltage battery alone, so these counts cannot be matched to the defect in 26V630000.
How can an ID.4 owner keep track of this recall?
The repair has no date, so for now the VIN lookup is the only way to confirm a car is in 26V630000. Saving a 2023-2026 ID.4 in your garage lets you open it later and have it checked for new NHTSA recall campaigns.
