If you are shopping for a used Ford F-150 Lightning, the 2023 model year is the one NHTSA's record names most often: 11 recall campaigns list it and 112 owner complaints were filed against it, both as of October 14, 2026. RideTruth's catalog covers the 2022 through 2025 model years, and Ford said in December 2025 that production of the current truck would end that year. News coverage, not cited here, reported in mid-October that demand for used ones rose.
How many recall campaigns list each Lightning model year?
Eleven campaigns list the 2023. The 2022 has 9, the 2024 has 4 and the 2025 has 3. The gas-powered F-150 has a separate record, with its 2026 filings covered in our 2026 F-150 recall post. A campaign counts under every model year it lists, so one filing can appear in several rows.
| Model year | Campaigns listing it | Campaign numbers |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 9 | 22V453000, 23V418000, 23V801000, 25V131000, 25V272000, 25V313000, 25V340000, 25V731000, 25V863000 |
| 2023 | 11 | 23V168000, 23V418000, 23V688000, 23V801000, 24V144000, 24V949000, 25V131000, 25V272000, 25V313000, 25V731000, 25V863000 |
| 2024 | 4 | 24V949000, 25V131000, 25V341000, 25V863000 |
| 2025 | 3 | 25V341000, 25V438000, 25V863000 |
Here is what each campaign covers, as Ford described it in its filings with NHTSA.
| Campaign | Filed | Area | Model years listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22V453000 | Jun 24, 2022 | Tire pressure monitoring light may not illuminate | 2022 |

| 23V418000 | Jun 9, 2023 | Rear lightbar lens microcracks, reverse lights | 2022, 2023 |
| 23V688000 | Oct 13, 2023 | Cabin heater module, windshield defrosting | 2023 |
| 23V801000 | Nov 28, 2023 | Electronic stability control not activating at start | 2022, 2023 |
| 24V144000 | Feb 23, 2024 | Battery junction box bus bar fasteners | 2023 |
| 24V949000 | Dec 19, 2024 | Front upper control arm ball joint nut | 2023, 2024 |
| 25V131000 | Feb 28, 2025 | High-voltage battery cell short circuit | 2022, 2023, 2024 |
| 25V272000 | Apr 23, 2025 | Battery junction box bus bar fasteners | 2022, 2023 |
| 25V313000 | May 9, 2025 | Stability control, earlier repair done incorrectly | 2022, 2023 |
| 25V340000 | May 23, 2025 | Tire pressure light, earlier repair done incorrectly | 2022 |
| 25V341000 | May 23, 2025 | Front upper control arm ball joint nut | 2024, 2025 |
| 25V438000 | Jun 27, 2025 | Front brake hose bracket screws | 2025 |
| 25V731000 | Oct 24, 2025 | Rear lightbar, trucks previously repaired under 23V418000 | 2022, 2023 |
| 25V863000 | Dec 12, 2025 | Park module may not lock into park | 2022 through 2026 |
Four of these name the high-voltage battery: 23V168000, 24V144000, 25V131000 and 25V272000. Of the four campaigns whose populations were checked for this post, Ford estimates 272,645 vehicles for 25V863000, which also covers the Mustang Mach-E and Maverick. The others are 29,501 for 25V341000, 11,922 for 24V949000 and 950 for 25V131000. For 25V131000, NHTSA's record says owners are advised to charge to a maximum of 80% until the repair is done. Those are Ford's estimates of vehicles potentially affected, not counts of defective trucks.
The newest campaign in RideTruth's list for the Lightning is 25V863000, filed December 12, 2025. NHTSA's recall file can trail new filings, so a recent campaign may not appear yet. A campaign applies to the VINs Ford listed, not to every truck of a model year, so use NHTSA's recall lookup on the specific truck.
NHTSA complaints by Lightning model year
The 2023 leads with 112, then the 2022 with 92, the 2024 with 30 and the 2025 with 8.
| Model year | NHTSA complaints |
|---|---|
| 2022 | 92 |
| 2023 | 112 |
| 2024 | 30 |
| 2025 | 8 |
Owners decide whether to file at all, and RideTruth has no Lightning sales or mileage figures to set against these totals, so a bigger count for one year does not rank trucks by how likely they are to fail. The counts are the complaints RideTruth has matched to each Lightning model year.
Which systems lead the 2023 Lightning's complaints?
Electrical, which is named in 61 of the 112 complaints on the 2023 Lightning. Driver Assistance & Speed Control follows at 31, Visibility & Lighting at 29, Transmission & Drivetrain at 17 and Brakes at 15. Owners can tick several areas on one report, so a single complaint may sit in two or more of these rows.
The two rear lightbar campaigns, 23V418000 and 25V731000, are filed under exterior lighting, which RideTruth counts in its Visibility & Lighting area, 29 here. Whether any of those 29 reports describe the lightbar problem is something a count of labels cannot show.
EPA's MPGe and range by model year
EPA rates the 2022, 2023 and 2024 Lightning at 66 to 70 MPGe combined and the 2025 at 66 to 72 MPGe, depending on the configuration. All are battery-electric, so the unit is MPGe, not mpg. The range column is EPA-estimated, from fueleconomy.gov, not a figure Ford estimated.
| Model year | EPA combined MPGe | EPA-estimated range, miles |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 66 to 70 | 230 to 320 |
| 2023 | 66 to 70 | 240 to 320 |
| 2024 | 66 to 70 | 240 to 320 |
| 2025 | 66 to 72 | 240 to 320 |
In the range column, the low figure is a standard-battery 4WD listing on fueleconomy.gov and the high figure an Extended Range listing. The 2022 page and the pages for the other three years list every EPA configuration with its city and highway MPGe.

Ford's statement on the end of the current Lightning
In a news release dated December 15, 2025, Ford said production of the current F-150 Lightning would end that year. The same release announced a next-generation F-150 Lightning built around extended-range electric technology, which Ford describes as driven entirely by electric motors, with a generator-backed estimated range of more than 700 miles. Ford said it would assemble that truck at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn and would share launch timing later.
Checking one used Lightning before you buy
Before you pay, put the truck's VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup and compare any open campaign with the table above, the four battery campaigns first. If you buy it, save it in your garage; each later visit there runs a fresh search for new NHTSA recall campaigns for the truck.
