The 2026 Ford Maverick hybrid gets the best gas mileage of any pickup: EPA rates the front-drive version at 38 MPG combined, on ratings RideTruth loaded as of October 24, 2026. Nothing else is close. Among full-size trucks, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra with the 3.0-liter diesel lead at 25 MPG, and the Ford F-150 hybrid follows at 24. I ranked 13 pickup models from EPA's 2026 ratings, each at its best gas or diesel version, and checked the leaders against fueleconomy.gov's records.

Which 2026 pickups get the best gas mileage?
Each model appears once, at its best-rated version. City and highway are EPA's figures for that version.
| Rank | Truck | Combined MPG | City | Highway | Version EPA rated |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ford Maverick | 38 | 42 | 35 | 2.5L hybrid, FWD |
| 2 | Chevrolet Silverado | 25 | 23 | 28 | 3.0L diesel, RWD |
| 2 | GMC Sierra | 25 | 23 | 28 | 3.0L diesel, RWD |
| 4 | Ford F-150 | 24 | 23 | 25 | 3.5L hybrid, RWD |
| 5 | Toyota Tacoma | 23 | 22 | 24 | 2.4L turbo, RWD; or 2.4L hybrid, 4WD |
| 5 | Ford Ranger | 23 | 21 | 25 | 2.3L 4-cylinder, RWD |
| 7 | Ram 1500 | 22 | 20 | 25 | 3.6L V6 mild hybrid, RWD |
| 7 | Toyota Tundra | 22 | 20 | 24 | 3.4L hybrid, RWD |
| 9 | Chevrolet Colorado | 21 | 19 | 24 | 2.7L 4-cylinder, RWD |
| 9 | Nissan Frontier | 21 | 19 | 24 | 3.8L V6, RWD |
| 9 | Honda Ridgeline | 21 | 18 | 24 | 3.5L V6, AWD |
| 12 | GMC Canyon | 20 | 19 | 23 | 2.7L 4-cylinder, RWD |
| 13 | Jeep Gladiator | 19 | 17 | 22 | 3.6L V6, 4WD |
The Tacoma and Ranger tie at 23. Both reach it with a rear-drive turbocharged four-cylinder and no hybrid system, and the Tacoma's four-wheel-drive hybrid matches that number too. So among midsize pickups, a hybrid buys you four-wheel drive at the same EPA rating, not a better one.
Why is the Maverick so far ahead?
The hybrid system. The Maverick is a small pickup built on a front-drive layout, but its gas-only versions rate 23 to 26 MPG, barely above the Silverado diesel. The hybrid is what opens the 13 MPG gap to second place, which is bigger than the gap between second place and last.
The front-drive hybrid gets 38, and the two hybrids with part-time four-wheel drive get 37 and 36.
At 12,000 miles a year and $3.50 a gallon, the example inputs in RideTruth's fuel cost calculator, that is about $1,105 of fuel for the 38 MPG hybrid and about $1,615 for a 26 MPG gas Maverick. Put in your own miles to see the gap for you.
Diesel or hybrid in a full-size truck?
On EPA's numbers, it's close. The Silverado and Sierra diesels get 25 MPG combined with rear-wheel drive. The F-150 hybrid gets 24 with rear-wheel drive, and the best four-wheel-drive F-150 gets 23.
Diesel usually costs more per gallon than regular, so equal MPG doesn't mean an equal fuel bill. Check the local price of both before letting a 1 MPG difference decide it.
The F-150's 2026 versions span 12 to 24 MPG combined, from the 5.2-liter V8 at the bottom to the rear-drive hybrid at the top.
Does towing change these numbers?
A lot. EPA tests without a load or trailer, and towing cuts real mileage sharply, so use these figures to compare trucks, not to predict your own. Electric pickups are rated in MPGe, so they aren't ranked here.
What should I check before buying a truck?
The recall record. Ford filed 14 campaigns naming an F-150 in 2026 through October 6, the most of any Ford pickup, as we tallied in our Ford recall roundup; not every one lists the 2026 truck, so check by VIN. Every model-year page on RideTruth lists recalls next to EPA figures, and if you buy, save the truck in your garage so new recalls reach you.
